Growing in Faith Through the Sacraments

The Sacraments are at the heart of Catholic life. They are precious opportunities to encounter Christ and to grow more deeply in our relationship with God and with His Church.

At St Vincent’s Catholic Primary School, children have the opportunity to prepare for and receive two important Sacraments during their primary school journey: the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

This is a very special time for our children, their families, our school community and our parish communities. Preparation takes place through our Religious Education curriculum, alongside prayer, reflection and opportunities to deepen children's understanding of their faith.

We work closely with parents and our parish priests throughout this journey, recognising the important role that home, school and parish each play in nurturing a child's faith.

Our preparation is supported by The Way, The Truth and The Life programme, which enables children to explore Scripture, the teachings of Jesus and the meaning of the Sacraments. Children also have special books in which they can record and reflect upon their sacramental journey.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation

In preparation for Easter, our Year 3 children are invited to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the spring term.

Through their preparation, children learn about God's great love and mercy. They explore what it means to recognise when we have made choices that have hurt our relationship with God or with others, to be genuinely sorry, to ask for forgiveness and to seek God's help to live differently.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation reminds us that God's mercy is always greater than our failings. Through the Sacrament, we receive God's forgiveness and are invited to begin again with a renewed heart.

As part of their preparation, the children learn and pray the Act of Contrition:

O my God, because you are so good,
I am very sorry that I have sinned against you,
And by the help of your grace, I will try not to sin again.

This is a significant moment in the children's faith journey and an opportunity for them to experience the love, mercy and forgiveness of God.

The Sacrament of the Eucharist

The Eucharist is at the heart of Catholic worship.

Through the Eucharist, we remember and celebrate the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. We particularly remember the Last Supper, when Jesus shared a final meal with His disciples and gave Himself to us in the Eucharist.

At Mass, Catholics believe that the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. When we receive Holy Communion, we receive Christ and are drawn more deeply into communion with Him and with one another.

The Eucharist therefore brings us together as one family of faith. As St Paul reminds us, we are one body in Christ.

Following their preparation and their First Reconciliation, our Year 3 children celebrate their First Holy Communion in May/June.

First Holy Communion is a joyful and deeply significant occasion in the life of each child. We celebrate with our families, school community and parish, with celebrations taking place at St Vincent's Church, Altrincham, and Holy Angels Church, Hale Barns.

A Journey Shared Together

The preparation for the Sacraments is not simply about learning facts. It is about helping children to encounter Christ, deepen their faith and recognise their place within God's family.

We are privileged to accompany our children on this journey, working together with parents and our parish priests to ensure that these special celebrations are meaningful moments of faith, prayer and joy.

Through Reconciliation, our children discover the mercy and forgiveness of God.
Through the Eucharist, they encounter Christ and become more deeply united with Him and His Church.

We pray that these Sacraments will be the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith, helping our children to know God's love, live as followers of Christ and continue to ‘Let Your Light Shine’.

Children can wear; a white shirt, black or navy trousers and a red tie (which can be purchased from school for a small fee) or a white communion dress. Children receive a certificate and communion pendant to commemorate the day. Please click here to see an example.
