Personal Development
At St Vincent's Catholic Primary School, we believe that personal development is just as important as academic achievement. Through a carefully planned and ambitious programme, we equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, values and experiences they need to lead healthy, happy and successful lives. Our personal development curriculum is built around:
- Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
- Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)
- Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development
- British Values
- Careers and aspirations
- Inclusion, equality and diversity
- Mental health and wellbeing
- Pupil leadership and service
- Wider opportunities and enrichment.
Rooted in our Catholic mission and school values: Be Kind, Be Respectful, Make a Difference and Be Passionate about Learning, our curriculum helps children develop confidence, resilience, empathy, independence and respect for others.
A Planned Curriculum for Life
Our personal development curriculum is carefully sequenced from Reception to Year 6 so that pupils revisit and deepen their understanding as they grow. Learning is age appropriate and enables children to make informed choices, build healthy relationships, stay safe and prepare for life in modern Britain. Pupils learn about:
- physical and mental health
- healthy relationships and online safety
- consent and personal safety
- equality, diversity and protected characteristics
- economic wellbeing and financial understanding
- democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect
- citizenship and their rights and responsibilities.
As a UNICEF Rights Respecting School, children learn about the rights of every child and how they can make a positive difference within their communities and the wider world.
Enrichment and Wider Opportunities
We believe every child should experience a rich and varied education beyond the classroom. Our enrichment programme is carefully planned using the Department for Education's Enrichment Framework, ensuring pupils have equitable access to high-quality experiences that broaden horizons, develop talents and build cultural capital. Pupils benefit from:
- educational visits and residential experiences
- visitors and workshops
- music tuition, choirs and performances
- sporting competitions and festivals
- enterprise and fundraising projects
- outdoor learning
- a wide range of clubs and extra-curricular activities
- opportunities to participate in local, national and international initiatives.
These experiences help pupils discover new interests, develop confidence and raise aspirations for their future.
Pupil Leadership and Service
Children are encouraged to make a meaningful contribution to school life through leadership opportunities including:
- Mini Vinnies
- School Council
- Digital Leaders
- Eco Team Leaders
- Wellbeing Leaders
- Prefects
- Sports Leaders
These roles help pupils develop responsibility, teamwork, leadership and a commitment to serving others.
Inclusion and Belonging
We are proud to be an inclusive school where everyone is valued. Through our curriculum, assemblies, worship and whole-school celebrations, pupils learn to respect different cultures, faiths, beliefs and backgrounds, recognising that diversity strengthens our community. We ensure every child has equal access to opportunities by removing barriers to participation so that all pupils can flourish.
Preparing Pupils for the Future
Our programme supports pupils to develop high aspirations and an understanding of the wide range of opportunities and careers available to them. Alongside excellent academic teaching, pupils develop the confidence, resilience and life skills needed to succeed in secondary school and beyond. Through our ambitious personal development curriculum and extensive enrichment programme, every child is encouraged to grow in faith, flourish as an individual and truly let their light shine.
