Moving to Secondary School

Moving to secondary school is an exciting and important milestone in every child’s education. Trafford offers a diverse range of secondary schools, including selective grammar schools, non-selective schools and independent schools, giving families a wealth of opportunities to explore. We encourage parents and carers to begin researching their options early and to consider which school will best meet their child’s individual strengths, interests, aspirations and needs. Visiting schools is an important part of making an informed decision. We recommend attending open events, exploring school websites, meeting staff and, wherever possible, talking to current pupils and families. At St Vincent’s, our transition programme begins well before pupils leave us. We work closely with children and families to ensure that pupils are prepared for the academic, social and emotional changes that secondary school brings. Our pupils are encouraged to develop independence, resilience, confidence and a positive attitude towards learning. We also introduce children to a range of question types commonly encountered in secondary school entrance assessments and provide opportunities to practise working accurately and confidently under timed conditions. This helps pupils to become familiar with different assessment formats and develop effective examination techniques without losing sight of the wider purpose of their education. For families who would like additional preparation, paid after-school tuition is also available.
