How we Assess the Impact of the Curriculum
Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning at St Vincent's Catholic Primary School. It enables teachers to understand what pupils know, remember and can do, so that learning is adapted to help every child achieve their full potential. We assess pupils in three ways:
Formative Assessment
Formative assessment takes place every day in every classroom. Teachers use effective questioning, observation, discussion, retrieval practice, quizzes and pupils' work to check understanding and identify misconceptions. This ongoing assessment enables teachers to:
- adapt teaching to meet pupils' needs
- address gaps in knowledge quickly
- provide timely feedback
- plan the next steps in learning
- ensure pupils build securely on prior knowledge.
Summative Assessment
At the end of units or sequences of learning, teachers assess pupils' knowledge, skills and understanding through quizzes, tests and other assessment activities. These assessments help teachers evaluate progress, inform future planning and ensure pupils are on track to meet age-related expectations.
Statutory Assessment
Throughout primary school, pupils take part in a number of national statutory assessments.
Early Years Foundation Stage
At the end of Reception, teachers complete the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile, using their professional judgement to assess each child's attainment against the Early Learning Goals.
Key Stage 1
Children in Year 1 complete the Phonics Screening Check, which assesses their phonics knowledge and early reading skills. Children who do not meet the expected standard in Year 1 retake the screening check in Year 2.
Key Stage 2
Pupils complete the following statutory assessments:
- Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check
- Year 6 National Curriculum Assessments (SATs) in English and mathematics, together with teacher assessment in writing and science.
Using Assessment Effectively
Assessment information is used to:
- celebrate pupils' achievements
- identify next steps in learning
- provide additional support or challenge where needed
- monitor the progress of individuals and groups
- evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and the curriculum.
Our assessment processes ensure that every child is supported to make excellent progress and achieve their very best. The following links will provide a guide to the National Curriculum Assessments
