World Poetry Day
Start: 21st Mar 2016 9:00am
This year, St Vincent’s would like to mark World Poetry Day in school, where children will have an opportunity to perform and discuss poetry.
In preparation for this we are going to ask children to learn a piece of poetry in order to perform it to their class on the day. The poem that they choose should be one that interests or amuses them and one which they would like to share with their friends.
Please could you encourage your child to challenge themselves by choosing a poem that both appeals to them and can also show off their skills in expression and tone. If your child is keen to choose a longer or more challenging poem, but may struggle to learn it all, then they could perform the first verse or first few verses. Children in Reception may wish to choose a nursery rhyme that they enjoy.
Class teachers will be presenting certificates on the day for: longest poem learnt, excellent effort and excellent expression.
Some poets who may appeal to children include:
- Dr Seuss
- Alan Ahlberg
- Alfred Noyes (e.g. Daddy fell into the pond)
- Ogden Nash (e.g. Adventures of Isabel)
- Roald Dahl – There are lots of poems/songs in the Roald Dahl books e.g. James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
- Mary Ann Hobermann – lovely short rhyming poems e.g. Growing and Waiters
