Year 2

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go."

Dr Seuss

Introduction

In Year 2, it is a busy but exciting year! The children are encouraged to work more independently and take on more responsibility for the work that they create and present. During this year, we hope that the children progress, prepared with a high quality education where each person can develop their individual potential.

We will continue to celebrate, the uniqueness of each child created in the image of God. Some good examples of important events this year are:

  • Taking part as readers in Masses as well as the Christmas and Easter Services alongside Year 6 children.
  • Performing in a spectacular end of school musical.
  • Whole school events, such as United Nations Day and World Book Day.

Curriculum Content

Our children study a range of interesting and engaging topics, which are detailed below.

In Science, our children will be studying a range of topics, from taking care of ourselves and growing up, to discovering the habitats in the environment, which surrounds us! Within our lessons, children have the opportunity to discover the scientific world through practical investigations and experiments, which not only engages the children, but also offers the children a deeper understanding of scientific ideas.

Year 2’s ICT curriculum is varied and provides a cross-curricular nature with other subjects, such as Humanities and Literacy. Progressing from Year 1, Year 2 discover the world of coding through fantastic apps such as Scratch, digital content as well as ensuring our personal safety when using the Internet and other digital platforms.

In Humanties this year, we are focusing on significant events, such as the Queen’s coronation and The Titanic and significant individuals like Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi.

Within Geography, we shall be exploring the differences and similarities of the UK compared to Africa, our surrounding environment as well as identifying human and physical features of the UK, particularly London. We would welcome anything from home that is related to these topics if your child would like to bring them in!

Our Art curriculum opens up the children’s minds to new styles of art and using colour through a range of different artists, such as Mondrian, Pollock, Rothlo and Klee.

Each week, Year 2 is able to enjoy a variety of sporting activities with help from specialist sports coaches, multi-skills and football.
