Francis House

Date: 19th Oct 2015 @ 3:11pm

This morning, the children in the Junior Department received a visit from Kate at Francis House, a charity dedicated to helping children who are terminally ill. Kate came in to talk to the children about all of the good work Francis House do and what we as a school can do to help.

Below is a summary from Kate:

Francis House is a very special hospice caring for children with a short life expectancy.  The criteria for entry into the hospice are that the child has been diagnosed as having ‘no cure’.  It is therefore unlikely that any of these children will ever become adults, and consequently we try to improve the quality of their short lives.

One of the main features of Francis House is that it supports the family as a whole and not just the child at the time of death.  Families are looked after both emotionally and physically for many months before, and are equally supported in the same manner afterwards. We offer a 24-hour lifeline to families as well as counselling, day-care and home-care, all tailored to suit the individual’s needs. Caring for someone, often for twenty four hours a day, seven days a week can put a huge strain on families.

Francis House was opened in 1991 by HRH the Princess of Wales to fill an enormous gap in the provision of care for children with a short life expectancy in the North West, and children from all over the UK have benefited from its services. In the 24 years of its operation, Francis House has provided vital care for thousands of children and their families, care that would have been impossible to provide had Francis House not existed.

Francis House is free of charge to all who stay, as financial problems are the last thing on parents mind at this sad time. We are, however, almost entirely reliant upon voluntary funding and receive only a little support from the government.  The running costs at present are over £3.6 million a year to keep the doors of Francis House open.

If you wish to find out more about Francis House our Website is www.francishouse.org.uk

As a school, we have agreed to support Francis House.  We are going to record a Christmas CD that we will produce and sell ourselves in order to raise money for this wonderful charity.

Kate would also like to extend an invitation to anyone who would wish to attend an open day at Francis House to see the excellent work that is being done there.  Please click here for more details.

Girls' Football League

Date: 16th Oct 2015 @ 6:10pm

Tonight was the second round of the Trafford Girls' Football League and St. Vincent's had two teams determined to add to their earlier round successes.

St. Vincent's A began the night against St. Hugh's.  Determined and tireless, St. Vincent's showed intent throughout and quickly led 3-0 within the first three minutes, with Elkie and Lottie especially proving to be a handful for the St. Hugh's defence.  By half time, the girls were 6 up and passing the ball around with confidence.  The game ended 8-0 with outstanding performances throughout the team.

Next up for the A team was the first big test of the season, against a strong Heyes Lane A team.  The game began and it soon became clear that Heyes Lane would put us through a stern test.  Rebecca and Mollie were called upon many times to keep the defence tight and Nathalie produced a fantastic save to keep St. Vincent's solid at the back.  Imogen and Evie were strong in midfield, working tirelessly to keep the momentum with our attack. Izzy produced a centre midfield masterclass as she worked the ball through the Heyes Lane midfield. In the end, two excellent finishes from Lottie and Elkie swung the game in St. Vincent's favour and the girls maintain their 100% winning streak.  A special mention must go out to Elkie who scored 4 very important goals tonight that swung both games in our favour.  Well done Elkie!

St. Vincent's B also won their first game of the season 2-0 against Stamford Park, with two outstanding strikes from Josephine who moved up the pitch from defence into attack this week.  Mr Nicholls was very proud to see the girls play so well together!

Well done St. Vincent's Girls and keep up the wonderful work!

She will go to the Ball!

Date: 16th Oct 2015 @ 12:51pm

Florence Gray in Year 6 had some very exciting news this week! She was successful in the auditions for the professional production of Cinderella, at the Opera House in Manchester. Florence had to perform a dance routine in front of judges in order to be chosen.

The show is part of the pantomime season and is on between 5th December to 3rd January. Florence will be part of a cast which includes Olympic gold medal winners Jayne Torville and Christopher Dean.

Congratulations and well done Florence!

PTA Quiz Night

Date: 18th Oct 2015 @ 10:08am

Huge thanks go to everyone who made Quiz 2015 Night such an enjoyable and successful evening. We had a "full house" and it was great to see so many people there. Congratulations to the teachers who won (again!).

Sponsored Walk for Mission Together

Date: 12th Oct 2015 @ 2:50pm

All of the children and staff of St. Vincent's came together this afternoon to complete a sponsored walk in order to raise money for Mission Together, the Catholic Church's official overseas charity for children.  This year we are part of the 'Together in Malawi' project, which you can find out about on our homepage!

As you can see from the pictures, everyone had a lot of fun walking together.  All of the children will take a red money box home after the run and try and fill it with as much money as they can find!

Thank you to all of the parents and children for supporting the school in helping Mission Together!

Year 5 and 6 Football Tournament

Date: 12th Oct 2015 @ 8:04pm

The Year 5 and Year 6 boys' A Team took part in a tournament of friendly games at Timperley Cricket Club on Friday after school. The boys played with determination and commitment and took part in 3 fixtures. Unfortunately, they were beaten 4-0 in the first game by a very strong Stamford Park side. However, the boys showed resolve in earning a hard fought 1-1 draw against Navigation Road. The same battling spirit was displayed in the final game of the evening as the boys came up against Park Road and achieved a 2-2 draw. Each player played with a positive attitude and dedication. The parents who attended the tournament deserve a special 'thank you' as their willingness to stay a little later meant that the boys could enjoy a third game. This could not have happened without their support.

We are healthy!

Date: 8th Oct 2015 @ 4:15pm

Today, Year 6 had a dietitian come and visit our school to give a talk on healthy eating. The talk helped us to understand more about our current science topic 'Our Body'. We learnt all sorts about how to keep healthy and what risks and dangers come with not living a healthy lifestyle. After the talk we even got to try lots of healthy snacks such as unflavoured popcorn mixed with raisins, fruit infused water and natural yoghurt with strawberries.  We also found out how much sugar we should have a day and how much sugar can be found in chocolate bars, biscuits and fizzy drinks. A bottle of coke contains 16 teaspoons, can you believe it!? That's our entire recommended sugar intake for 4 days in one short drink!  We'd really like to thank Miss Kenney for coming to visit us, it's definitely got us thinking about what we put in our bodies!

Lacrosse Tournament

Date: 8th Oct 2015 @ 11:59am

Well done to our Mixed Lacrosse team who started their season at a very rainy tournament this week but made us proud by trying their best and getting better and better with every game they played!

Date: 11th Oct 2015 @ 6:35pm

On Tuesday morning, The Nice Move removal company picked up our donations for the Revive Centre. We were overwhelmed with the response to our request for donations. Thanks again to Nice Move for helping us transport the donations. The van was completely full!

Head Boy: Sammy

Congratulations to all of team, who are raring to go and help St. Vincent's be the best it can be!

Girls Football League

Date: 2nd Oct 2015 @ 7:09pm

St. Vincent's girls came out in force on the opening day of the Trafford girls football league, with two teams in action. Mr Blain saw the girls A team work well as a team as they beat Altrincham CofE 6-0 and Stamford Park 9-0.  Every player played well with special mentions to Imogen for her incredible goal whilst doing the splits and to Lottie for scoring from just past the half way line.  The whole team won man of the match, as everyone played so well!

Mr Nicholls saw the girls B team play some incredibly difficult opposition, including last year's league champions Bollin.  The girls were very brave and a special mention must go to Molly who played superbly in goal and to Suzanna, who scored the team's first goal of the season. In the end, The girls were beaten 6-0 by Bollin, 5-0 by Heyes Lane A and 3-2 by Heyes Lane B.

The next set of fixtures will be played in two weeks. Keep up the hard work girls.

Whole School Mass

Date: 29th Sep 2015 @ 11:25am

St. Vincent's opened up the school year this morning with a whole school mass dedicated to our school Patron Saint, Vincent.   As you can see from the pictures, the weather was perfect and the whole atmosphere was of excitement at the whole school coming together to celebrate mass. It was wonderful to see so many parents and families attending.

The staff and children from each class brought a class shield up to the Offertory, each shield personalised to the interests and hobbies of those in that class.

A big thank you to Mr McCann and Mrs McDuff for organising the mass and especially to Father John and Father Jonathan for celebrating with us.

We look forward to celebrating more masses throughout the year.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

Date: 25th Sep 2015 @ 11:17am

There was a huge turnout today at St. Vincent's for the Macmillan Coffee Morning.  It was wonderful to see so many parents and of course cake!

We would like to thank all of the parents who came to the morning and especially to the parents who donated cake and their time to help make the morning a success.

We would also like to thank all of the year 6 waiters and waitresses who did a magnificent job in making the morning a huge success.

The current total of money raised is £662.13!  Well done to everyone involved, especially Mrs Farfan who was the chief organiser.

A Royal Reply!

Date: 21st Oct 2014 @ 4:38pm

Thomas Caunce, Year 6, wrote a letter to the Queen during the summer holidays, to share his thoughts about the Royal Navy, informing her that in his opinion The Royal Navy was too small and that they ought to have more ships patrolling our seas, or a large battle ship.  Here's what Thomas had to say on the matter:

"I decided to write a letter to The Queen because the Royal Navy is very small and it needs a battle ship, as it only has cruisers and destroyers. The Queen replied thanking me for my wonderful letter, but informed me that these are not matters that she could deal with. She said she would pass my letter on to the Prime Minister. I then received a letter from The Prime Minister saying that maybe the Ministry of Defence might be interested in these matters. He forwarded my letter to them and they responded saying that they have sent the letter onto the Ships and Badges Committee (they come up with the names of ships for the Royal Navy). They might use my ideas of calling a ship HMS Dartmouth in the future!

I am very proud of what I achieved over the summer holidays and my family are too!"

And of course everyone at St. Vincent's is proud of Thomas' achievement, going to show that everyone's opinions and voices really do count even to the most prestigious members of our country.

Well done Thomas!!

St Bede's Sports Challenge

Date: 21st Sep 2015 @ 10:19pm

Only a few weeks into the new School year and St. Vincent's are celebrating winning their first trophies of the year!  Two teams made up of Year 5 girls and boys travelled into Manchester to participate in the annual St. Bede's sport's challenge on Friday afternoon.

The football team and netball team both played superbly throughout, showing an excellent attitude on and off the pitch and a thirst to try their best.  In the end, both teams returned with the winning trophies and the shield for overall winners.

Mrs Farrell was quoted as saying that the afternoon was "The best send off" she could have as she finishes at St. Vincent's and prepares to have a baby.   Mrs Lindsey said that it was the best tournament she had ever been involved in.

A big thank you to St. Bede's for being wonderful hosts and well done to all of the children participating in what turned out to be a very friendly and enjoyable event.

Wrap Around Care at St Vincent’s Nursery for Reception Children

Dear Parents,

The School has been made aware that the Breakfast Club and After School Club operated by Fun After 4 are currently unable to meet the demand for places this September. Therefore, in order to support our families, St Vincent’s Nursery has decided to offer a limited number of breakfast and tea time sessions for Reception children that have not been able to secure a place at Fun After 4, on a first come, first served basis beginning this September.

If you have been unable to secure wrap around care and would like your Reception child to attend wrap around care based at St Vincent’s Nursery, please contact Karen Colgan at the Nursery for more information. The Nursery’s telephone number is 0161 928 7581 or you can email stvincnursery@btconnect.com.  In this way, we hope that, if you wish, your childcare needs can be met at St Vincent’s.

Switched on!

Date: 14th Jul 2015 @ 8:58pm

Last week Year 4 made electric quiz boards by applying their knowledge of electrical circuits.

Each pair designed a base board, and were given circuit components and split pins. The base boards were designed to test knowledge of the electricity topic. The first task was to write six questions and answers and arrange them on a circuit board. The questions had to then be connected with the correct answers at the back of the board, using multiple series circuits. Then it was time to play!

We swapped quiz boards around so that we could match the questions to the correct answers, and check the game boards all worked. This was a chance for confident electricians to really show what they can do and what they know!

New Year 3 Parents' Evening

Date: 3rd Jul 2015 @ 8:21am

Thank you to all of the parents who attended the Year 3 New Parents' Evening.  Please find a link to the presentation below.

If you have any questions about your child moving up into Year 3, please don't hesitate to contact the school.

Music in the Air

Date: 12th May 2015 @ 9:18pm

In Year 4 we have been investigating "Sounds" during Science lessons.

We were asked, "How can we use air to make music?".

So, we used art straws to make pan pipes. This required lots of concentration and co-operation!

Our investigation helped us to discover that the longer the pan pipe, the more air that was vibrating inside. Therefore, the longer the pan pipe, the lower the note that was produced.

How do you think a small hole in the pan pipe might change the pitch? What would be your prediction?

Solar Eclipse

Date: 24th Mar 2015 @ 2:38pm

On the morning of Friday 20th March, all of the Juniors assembled onto the playground. We were armed with homemade sun viewers and special glasses from Jodrell Bank, ready to see this rare event. It was a very exciting experience and we followed it up with research and work in class. Here are some examples of information we put together about the Solar Eclipse during our Computing session. We hope you learn something new!

The Solar Eclipse Experience!

Date: 20th Mar 2015 @ 11:46am

STOP PRESS!!!

Science became much more real and enjoyable this morning when children, staff and parents stopped to watch the solar eclipse from 8.30am. One of our parents, Mrs Riley, who works in the Educational department at Jodrell Bank set up a telescope and pinhole camera and brought special viewing glasses for the safe viewing of the eclipse. Mrs Riley had spoken to the children the day before to explain about this rare event. Infant children had the opportunity to see the eclipse through the special viewing glasses and the children in KS2 made their own viewing boxes. Mr Noble joined us to photograph the eclipse as it happened. The children will be following this up with discussion and further work in class.

Candlemas

Date: 13th Mar 2015 @ 4:49pm

A beautiful, memorable and spiritual occasion was celebrated on 3 February 2015 to mark Candlemas ( 2 February). Each child was presented with a special 'light' which they passed on during a procession from Nursery to Y6 and which culminated in a gathering of children and staff in the Junior playground where Father John gave a special blessing.
