Year 2 Computing Xplorers workshop

Date: 11th Mar 2020 @ 12:16pm

This week the year 2 children have enjoyed taking part in workshops which have been delivered by Computer Xplorers, Manchester.

The children received an introduction to programming and learnt the fundamentals of programming video games using an easy to understand drag and drop programming method. Through this the children developed logic, sequencing and maths skills as they created their own platform game.

Thye were also able to add challenges and difficulties to their game which stretched their imagination and helped to develop all important thinking and problem solving skills.

The children participated in a micro:bit session which was a ‘build it and create it’ workshop using the micro:bit, pocket sized computer. The children created their own emoticon displays, sent coded messages and communicated with lights.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the workshops and this will greatly enhance their learning within the Computing curriculum.

Year 2 visit from Community Support Officer - Safer Internet Day

Date: 4th Feb 2020 @ 8:43pm

Following on from yesterday’s activities for Safer Internet Day, this afternoon the Year 2 children enjoyed a visit from Community Support Officer, Martin Thomasson  from Altrincham Police Station. Martin delivered a power point presentation to the children and it contained very important messages about online safety and how to keep themselves  safe and different suitable websites. He also talked about appropriate use of electronic devices, not sharing personal information, online gaming and chat rooms. Many of the children shared their own personal experiences and knowledge and there was time for a question and answer session at the end. Mrs Butler, one of our school governors, came to see the presentation and was very impressed with the sensible approach and attitudes of the year 2 children towards online safety.

Safer Internet Day in the Infant Department

Date: 4th Feb 2020 @ 8:19pm

Safer Internet Day in the Infant Department began with an assembly this morning led by the Junior Digital Leaders. Together, the Digital Leaders delivered a very informative assembly to the children. They talked through a power point presentation from the UK Safer Internet Centre. This year the theme is all about ‘Free to be me - exploring identity online.’ The Digital Leaders touched on incredibly important themes such as ‘What is the internet?’, ‘Is it ever safe to share personal information online?’, ‘Being kind online’ and ‘Asking parental consent to use websites.’  During the assembly, the children were invited to share their own experiences and knowledge. The children listened very attentively and the Digital Leaders shared very important information with them.

Following the assembly, the children went back to their own classes and completed lots of different activities and games about staying safe online. The year 1 children made posters based on the book ‘Smartie the Penguin’ which is all about online safety. The children then watched two video clips called ‘Free to be me - my online identity’ and following this they created their own ‘avatar’ and they made these into key rings that they can put on their school book bags which will serve as a talking point from today and a reminder of the important online safety messages that they were taught today.

Welcome to Year 2

Date: 7th Nov 2018 @ 3:50pm

Welcome to Year 2, a fast paced year full of new responsibilities and exciting challenges. Our ultimate aim is to give children the confidence and resiliance for moving into Key Stage 2. We want children to become independent learners, all within a fun environment.

The children have settled into their classes and have begun an exciting year. The children have already enjoyed different topics within writing such as 'Spooky Stories', and  'Winter Wonderland Stories' and are currently learning about 'The Great Fire of London' in History. This is a thoroughly enjoyable topic and the children are already very enthusiastic about it, many having already done their own independent research. The children have also produced some great art work using different mediums, creating a fantastic display in our classrooms.

This term we have been particularly focussing on our presentation and handwriting, with the aim to be joining all the letters correctly. You may have heard your child talking about the 'presentation pencil' for maths and writing, the children receive this special pencil when they have tried really hard.

Thank you for your encouragement and continued support at home particularly using the online resources, we have had some great feedback about them and the children have really enjoyed using them. Please feel free to direct any questions you have to your class teacher. We look forward to working with you during the year.
